Whale Watching Ballina
Gather at the lookout which is 200 meters from our front door and witness the Humpbacks migration, or watch them from one of a number of our apartments and penthouses where you can clearly see them as they pass close at this part of the Australian coastline.
Grandview is just 10 minutes along the coast from the Lennox Head lookout that is an official “Whale counting” point.
The Australian whale season from June to November, coincides with winter and spring, as the humpbacks begin their annual migration from Antarctica to their breeding ground and the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef. They frolic with their mates on the way up and back and you will often see them out from Grandview travelling in a pod… coming back you can see the little ones. Sometimes we see the water spout, sometimes a tail and sometimes they lift right out of the water (breach) and come down in a big splash.
If you want a closer look, take a Whale Watching Tour with food and drinks provided. Captain Lee at Ballina Ocean Tours has over 12 years experience and lots of local knowledge. Tours go on good weather days for up 3 hours.
One can also see dolphins playing in the waves from Grandview on any day, sitting in the Shelly Beach Cafe or just walking along the beach.
